Remarks by Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Estonia on the Negative Moves relating to Taiwan by Members of Riigikogu
2021-11-30 00:00

On November 28, two members of Riigikogu flew to Taiwan, China. They not only met with the leaders of the Taiwan region, but also proposed that Estonia should cautiously move "step by step" towards recognizing Taiwan and open the so-called “Taiwanese representation” in Estonia. The above-mentioned wrong words and deeds grossly interfere in China's internal affairs, undermine China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, seriously go against the one-China policy pursued by Estonia, and damage the China-Estonia relations. China strongly condemns and firmly opposes to it.

Resolution 2758 adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1971 confirmed that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, including Taiwan. The one-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a widely recognized norm governing international relations as well as the political foundation of bilateral relations between China and countries with diplomatic relations with China. China firmly opposes all forms of official interactions in any name or form between Taiwan and countries having diplomatic ties with China.

The membersof Riigikogu bear special status. The above mentioned words and deeds by the two members of Riigikogu have sent wrong signals to the "Taiwan independence" forces, damaging the political mutual trust between China and Estonia, and poisoning the atmosphere of bilateral relations. We solemnly informcertain politicians that Taiwan shares no other international status besides being a part of China. There is no prospect for Chinas Taiwan region other than its reunification with the mainland. No one should underestimate the strong resolve and capability of the Chinese government and people to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

We have noticed that the recent statement made by the Estonian government on abiding by the one-China policy. We hope that the Estonian side can fully realize the importance of the Taiwan question, remove distractions and take actions to honour its political commitments, earnestlysafeguarding the healthy development of China-Estonia relations.
