Remarks by Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Estonia on the Joint Statement on Lithuania's Relations with Taiwan by Chairs of Foreign Affairs Committees of a few European and US Parliaments
2021/08/29

On 27 August, Chairs of Foreign Affairs Committees of 13 European and US Parliaments, including Riigikogu, issued a joint statement which makes wanton comments on China's legitimate measures towards Lithuania. The Chinese Government firmly opposes this move.

There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The Chinese Government is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, which is the universally recognized norm governing international relations and the common consensus of the international community. The One-China principle is the political foundation for China to develop bilateral relations with other countries. Any country, when following the one-China policy, must strictly abide by the one-China principle, including severing all official ties with the Taiwan authorities. The Lithuanian Government, in disregard of China's repeated representations, has announced its decision to allow the Taiwan authorities to open a "representative office" under the name of "Taiwan". The decision brazenly violates the spirit of the communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Lithuania, and severely undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. China's firm and necessary response to Lithuania's actions is fully reasonable and legitimate.

China's firm resolve to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity is unshakable. The plot of certain countries to confuse the public opinion by claiming to "develop economic relations with Taiwan" is doomed to fail. We urge relevant MPs to take a correct and objective position and stop making wrong remarks on issues concerning China's core interests.
